The Hippo Water Roller Project: improving access to clean water

The Hippo Water Roller was invented in 1991 by two South Africans; Mr. Pettie Petzer and Johan Jonker. The purpose is to significantly enhance people’s quality of life thereby improving their health, education and economic opportunities. As of December 2011, approximately 38,000 Hippo rollers have been distributed in 17 countries directly benefiting in excess of 250,000 people. 95% of these rollers have been donated or sponsored by corporate businesses as part of their social responsibility programs.

The Hipporoller: Appropriate technology for improved access to water

The Hippo Water Roller improves access to water by rolling 90 litres (24gal) along the ground saving time and energy. Far less effort is required to roll the heavy weight of water (90kg / 200lbs) along the ground than carrying the traditional 20-liter (5-gallon) buckets on the head.

The drum is manufactured from UV stabilized Polyethylene and has been designed to withstand typical rural conditions. The large opening (135 mm / 5.3 inch diameter) allows for easy filling and cleaning of the interior. The sealed lid ensures hygienic storage of water and the steel handle provides firm control over difficult terrain while pushing or pulling the roller.

Innovative design

With a large drum capacity of 90 litres / 24 gallons, far less effort is required to roll the heavy weight of water (90kg / 200lbs) along the ground than carrying the traditional 20-liter (5-gallon) buckets on the head. The effective weight on level ground is just 10kg (22 pounds). The drum is manufactured from UV stabilized Polyethylene and has been designed to withstand typical rural conditions.

Informal trading

The "Hippo Mobile Spaza" utilizes the Hipporoller as a transport vehicle and display facility for products to be sold in rural and informal communities. Existing owners needed a further innovation to transport their goods and to become economically active.
